Strategic Sourcing Diagnostic

In the sourcing arena what was strategic five years ago is commonplace today. The relentless focus on cost savings and optimization have made strategic sourcing a must have tool in most company portfolios. But Strategic Sourcing is not the end state – it is the launching pad for more advanced capabilities. Advanced organizations are stretching the sourcing envelope further each year, continually growing the value proposition as new capabilities are added and existing ones further refined. As such, traditional definitions of sourcing maturity no longer apply.

Our diagnostics explore sourcing performance across six domains: Strategic Portfolio Management, Third Party Risk Management, Globalization of the Supply Chain, Performance Metrics for Sourcing, Supply Chain Management, and People. They identify potential opportunities in each area and for the sourcing organization as a whole using The Mpower Group's Procurement Maturity Model - a new measure of sourcing performance that accounts for the significant progress made in the discipline.

Our diagnostic can be delivered in one of four ways:

Independent of delivery method, the same underlying principles and characteristics are used to ensure that earlier results can be built on and expanded. For additional information on the diagnostics or on The Mpower Group's Procurement Maturity Model please contact us.

On Site

The On Site diagnostic is our most comprehensive diagnostic offering. Over an 8-10 week period, we will complete an on site assessment of all six maturity model domains (Strategic Portfolio Management, Third Party Risk Management, Globalization of the Supply Chain, Performance Metrics for Sourcing, Supply Chain Management, and People.) and identify current positioning and performance, future opportunities, and strategies to close the gap. This assessment may include spend and supplier analysis for in scope categories, a high-level skills assessment and a stakeholder analysis.

The output is a detailed report that identifies the case for change and the recommended advanced sourcing capabilities, estimated costs and benefits of the capabilities and a proposed program structure and timeline. If desired, The Mpower Group can also work with your sourcing organization to build internal support or develop detailed program plans and approaches. This type of engagement is tailored to meet your individual requests, focusing on specific areas of interest or integrating additional The Mpower Group offerings as dictated by your needs. Typically, work is performed by a joint team of your people and The Mpower Group to make it cost effective and to ensure maximum transfer of skill and knowledge. Deliverables:

  • Customized deliverables based on your needs

  • Detailed Assessment against maturity model

  • Business case for change

  • Transfer of skill and knowledge

  • Skills inventory and acquisition strategy

  • Stakeholder Analysis

  • Identification of issues and opportunities

Survey

In the Survey format, the diagnostic is delivered through a tailored survey instrument that addresses over 120 different performance factors and considers the specific needs and characteristics of your industry. The survey is typically completed by the head of a procurement organization, direct reports and other key personnel.

Using the information provided, The Mpower Group will consolidate and analyze the results, build a detailed performance profile, and develop structured observations on the strengths and opportunities for your organization. Turnaround time is typically between 2-4 weeks, including the time required to tailor and complete the survey.

Optionally, if multiple stakeholders complete the survey, The Mpower Group can also assess the degree of organizational alignment on sourcing performance. If desired, The Mpower Group can also assist in developing specific plans to capture the value identified in the diagnostic. The deliverable enables the organization to take a comprehensive environmental scan of the sourcing organization and the rest of the organization and forms the basis for a call to action with specific areas that require action planning. Deliverables:

  • Environmental scan of Sourcing Organization

  • Environmental scan of the rest of the organization

Workshop

In the workshop format, the diagnostic is the foundation of a 2 day strategic planning session delivered by The Mpower Group consultants for an organization's sourcing department. Typical attendees include the head of procurement, his or her direct reports, and other key personnel. The workshop aligns the organization on their current positioning and performance, identifies and creates a shared understanding of future opportunities, and develops potential strategies to close the gap. It is a very powerful vehicle to identify alignment and opportunities for alignment and facilitates strategic planning. Deliverables:

Web

In the web format, the diagnostic is delivered through a short, targeted questionnaire that covers a few key items in each of our six Procurement Maturity Model domains. Initial results are available immediately and cover positioning on our Procurement Maturity Model. It delivers a very high level assessment and, for qualifying companies, is followed by a short customized written report that highlights opportunities.
